5 years of clinical diagnosis and treatment efficiency surpassing the "Chinese speed"

The latest data shows that in the past 5 years, the hospital has completed treatment for 2692 patients, including 1358 cases of head and neck tumors, 468 cases of chest tumors, and 866 cases of abdominal, pelvic, and other tumors. 2542 patients, accounting for 94.4% of the total, were treated solely with heavy ions or heavy ion combined proton therapy, fully utilizing and leveraging the hospital's advantages in heavy ion technology.

In the past 5 years, with the continuous optimization and standardization of clinical diagnosis and treatment processes, the efficiency of clinical diagnosis and treatment in hospitals has been continuously increasing. The average annual growth rate of treatment volume has reached 28%. The treatment volume reached the first 1000 cases, which took 30 months, and the second 1000 cases, which took 18.5 months, have been shortened. Heavy ion radiotherapy for medium to high-risk prostate cancer significantly improves patient survival rate and quality of life. From the initial focus on both protons and heavy ions, the hospital has gradually developed into a focus on heavy ions. In terms of clinical application innovation of heavy ion technology, the hospital has taken the lead internationally and gradually become a "leader".

Initiated by the hospital and serving as one of the chief editors, we have published the world's first guideline monograph on proton heavy ion therapy, providing specific clinical treatment practices for our peers worldwide. Recently, the Chinese version of this monograph was officially published and released, providing practical guidance for clinical and medical physics practices of experts and scholars in the field of proton heavy ion radiotherapy for tumors in China.

The hospital has established control technology for treating tumors that move with the breath. With the help of independently developed rotating treatment beds, it has completed the research on proton heavy ion therapy for early lung cancer, becoming the first particle center in the world to report the results of using pen scanning and heavy ion technology to treat early lung cancer, achieving a "zero breakthrough" in international particle radiotherapy. The hospital actively responds to the national strategy of "integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta" and initiates the establishment of the Yangtze River Delta Cancer Prevention and Treatment Integrated Medical Consortium with the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Fudan University, promoting the benefits of cutting-edge tumor radiotherapy technology to the Yangtze River Delta, and providing mature experience and models for accelerating the introduction and standardization of proton heavy ion technology in the region. According to statistics, 59% of patients in hospitals come from the Yangtze River Delta region, with 34% being from Shanghai and 25% from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui provinces. With the strong support of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Science and Technology, the hospital has successfully established the "Shanghai Proton Heavy Ion Radiotherapy Engineering Technology Research Center" and its training base. It has also offered advanced courses in proton heavy ion radiotherapy technology, and has trained more than 40 professionals from various parts of the country, including Shanghai, Jiangsu, Anhui, etc., to prepare talent reserves for future proton heavy ion technology applications in other provinces and cities.

In terms of talent cultivation for proton and heavy ion shortage, the hospital has relied on Fudan University for five years to create and continuously cultivate six batches of 52 master's degrees in radiation physics, biomedical engineering, and has successfully graduated from four batches of 35 people. It has provided core professional talents for similar medical institutions and research and development institutions under construction or in preparation in China. In January of this year, the hospital was officially listed as an affiliated hospital of Fudan University. With the strong support of Fudan University's medical teaching and research resources, the hospital's talent cultivation has further accelerated. In response to the awkwardness of the lack of professional title sequence for radiation physicists and the lack of promotion opportunities, the hospital has innovatively established a five level physics teacher title system and promotion mechanism, including the chief physics teacher. It has developed a special training plan for physics teachers and established China's first in-service training course system for proton heavy ion radiation physicists, committed to cultivating China's first generation of "localized" chief physics teachers.
